TOP TEN PLACES TO VISIT IN NIGERIA (NUMBER THREE)

[3] THE SUKUR KINGDOM
The ‘Sukur kingdom’ lies between Gulag and Madagali in Madagali local government area of Adamawa State. This is an incredible kingdom with amazing people living a
unique lifestyle even in this our 21st Century.
The Sukur kingdom lies on a mountain with foot paths of stones from the foot to the peak of the mountain. At the first gate of the kingdom, there are two entrances, one is for everybody and the other one is for the king alone. The Sukur people have a belief that the king is not supposed to share the same passage with ordinary people.
It is also said that at the gate, sacrifice is being offered by slaughtering a goat.  The bones of the goat are then buried in the middle of the road and the skin of the goat is tied from end to end by a special method. Gradually, the extended goat hide disappears and this is taken to be a sign of appreciation from the gods.
Text Box: 42At the second gate is a chief blacksmith whom his duty is to guard the gate and also the king’s grave yard.  Another interesting thing is that the guard is not to see the king face-to-face except something terrible happens or there is a premonition of disaster that is expected to befall the king. And once it is late, he is not to allow anybody go beyond this point, no matter who that person might be.

The Sukur kingdom is no doubt a modernized archaic kingdom that we all need to learn from; especially it’s old and traditional but peaceful means of societal organization that is based on strong obedience to the norm, custom, and culture of the land.
